Harry and Meghan’s bombastic Netflix documentary will ‘go to war on the public’

Meghan and Harry’s upcoming Netflix documentary could slam the royal family and even the public for how the couple feels they’re being treated.

The series is reportedly set to premiere on Thursday, and royal sources have already claimed they expect the show to be “Oprah with more cries”.

But a hint of what viewers might experience also surfaced this morning in details of a conversation Harry had with a friend before meeting talk show Queen.

Senior sources told the Sun he expected the royal family would find the interview “quite shocking” and that “these Brits have a lesson to learn”.

In the interview, which drew 17.1million viewers, Harry and Meghan said the royals had asked questions about “how dark” their son would be and ignored their pleas for mental health support.

Buckingham Palace sources said last night that frustration and exhaustion are mounting at the spate of complaints Harry and Meghan have been relentless and public about their treatment by the rest of the royal family.

A slick trailer for the six-part program was released last week, teasing intimate moments and seemingly threatening to reveal more details of the couple’s troubled relationship with the family they’ve retired from.

The Prince and Princess of Wales were “surprised, but not so surprised” that the advert was published during their high-profile visit to the US and threatened to overshadow them, insiders added.

The lavish trailer, posted online on the second day of William and Kate’s visit to Boston, is the latest broadside in a seemingly endless onslaught by the Duke and Duchess on The Firm.

In a rare and notable intervention, royal sources described how King Charles and Queen Camilla are “not concerned, but tired” by the Sussexes’ criticism. An angry palace source stressed the word “tired”.

The royal family made “magnanimous and very conscious gestures” to include Prince Harry as much as possible in the late Queen’s funeral in September – including asking him to wear his military uniform during a key guard – but they are now being repaid with near-constant outbursts, is claimed.

Palace insiders underscored the irony of the many public interviews and television appearances the Sussexes have made while speaking of how they want a new life away from the public eye. Meghan and Harry, who live in the celebrity enclave of Montecito, California, slammed royal life in an interview with Oprah Winfrey last year.

Since then, Meghan has released a podcast series, while Harry has written a memoir that is expected to detail a range of grievances against his family when it is released next month.

“It’s very tiring,” repeated a source at the palace.

The comments came as the Duke and Duchess were accused of breaking protocol yesterday by bringing a private photographer into Buckingham Palace to take a photo that was included in the Netflix trailer.

Despite the trailer’s timing, a palace source said the Prince and Princess of Wales are “pleased” with the forthcoming documentary. However, it is feared there is now no turning back for the brothers’ relationship.

“Normally, when a member of the royal family goes on a high-profile foreign trip, nobody at home would try to disrupt the message of that trip,” added an insider.

The Waleses attended a star-studded gala to promote Williams’ Earthshot Prize on Friday night, seemingly determined to ensure the Netflix series doesn’t overshadow their work. The Prince of Wales had a 30-minute conversation with President Joe Biden, with the couple sharing “warm memories” of the late Queen and a discussion of how Mr Biden could support Earthshot, which awards £1million to five planet-saving projects every year .

Royal aides only discovered in recent days that Mr. Biden happened to be in Boston at the same time as the royal couple.

For the three-day visit, Kate wore smartly tailored pantsuits and modest high-necked dresses.

“The princess is very professional,” said an insider. “The wardrobe for the visit says it all. It’s all very business-like.” At Friday’s awards ceremony, guests were asked to dress “sustainably,” so Kate rented an emerald green Solace London dress from fashion platform Hurr, which costs £74 a night. She accessorized it with the emerald choker of her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana.

The King was keen to show his support for the Sussexes. In his first address to the nation after ascending the throne, he said: “I would like to express my love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives abroad.”

Still, Harry’s new media ventures seem to have caused his family more pain and dismay than they’ve been willing to admit.

He and Meghan will be hailed by the US liberal establishment for allegedly overcoming institutional racism in the royal family at a lavish ceremony in New York on Tuesday, just two days before the Netflix series is expected to air.

You will receive the so-called Ripple of Hope Award from Kerry Kennedy, a human rights activist and daughter of US Attorney General Robert Kennedy, who was assassinated in 1968.

Ms Kennedy has previously compared the Sussexes’ actions to her father’s fight against apartheid and praised their “moral courage”.

Relations could sour further when Harry’s memoir, Spare, is released on January 10 and promises the Duke’s first-hand account of his upbringing and decision to step down from royal duties.

The royal family also had to grapple with a race dispute last week after the late Queen’s lady-in-waiting asked a black guest at Buckingham Palace: “Where are you really from?” Lady Susan Hussey volunteered to step down and should “Deeply regret” debacle.

Prince William was about to board a plane to Boston when the news broke, but he spoke to his press secretary and agreed his office could respond – even including the word “racism” in the statement.
