A few hours ago, after a long wait, the first official trailer for the next and latest film was released Indiana Jones was finally revealed to the world, bringing Harrison Ford’s beloved archaeologist back into the heart of the action.
The trailer also revealed the film’s final title, viz Indiana Jones and the Wheel of Fortunea quite suggestive title that suggests itself at first glance more than one interpretation. As is tradition, the new Indy adventure is set to follow the tried-and-true formula of finding one ancient artifactwho could prove to be the bearer of mystical powers, similar to what happened previously with the Ark of the Covenant, the Holy Grail, and the Sankara Stones.
The name of the cryptic object mentioned in the title does not appear to refer directly to any known ancient artifact, hence the possibility that it could be a theme created from scratch specifically for the film. On the other hand, it could also refer to the fascinating mechanical device known as the ‘Machine of Antikythera’.
What is the best candidate for the so-called “Dial of Destiny” in the original language (literally Quadrante del Destino, adapted in Italian as “Wheel”) was found near the Greek island of the same name and is being considered the oldest known analog pocket calculator. Dating from the late Hellenistic period, it is a sophisticated planetarium that was used to calculate the movements of the five planets known at the time, the phases of the moon and the sunrise.
Given how many ancient Mediterranean cultures believed that the stars controlled the destiny of individuals, the instrument in question might turn out to be such much more than the first computer in history. It is therefore possible that the film’s story has a connection between the Antikythera machine and the ancient greek myths.
A certain conjecture could relate the mechanism to the figure of atropos, one of the three fates of Greek mythology. This represents destiny, the ultimate destiny of each individual’s death, since in the myth it was given the task of cutting the thread it represents with scissors the life of every living being thus determining the moment of death.
Atropos is fat shown with a sundial, and this may coincide precisely with the famous Antikythera Mechanism, a possibility that could lead Indiana Jones to confront his own mortality for the first time. if that’s the oneObject of interest to alleged former Nazis?
Mads Mikkelsen, who plays Nazi scientist Voller, describes his character as “a man who wants to right some of the mistakes of the past.” It is therefore possible that the wheel of destiny can be used to change the course of history or dramatically affect the future. The possibilities are many and to discover them we only have to wait for the arrival of the film on the big screen.
The film was directed Jacob Mangoldedited with the script by Jonathan Kasdan. Harrison Ford will be Professor Henry Jones III, known as Indiana Jones, again. We will also witness the return of John Rhys-Davies as Sallah Mohammed Faisel el-Kahir, Indy’s longtime friend and participant in many of his adventures.
Among the new additions to the cast, we’ll see instead Mads Mikkelsen as a self-proclaimed ex-Nazi scientist Voller, Boyd Holbrook and in the role of his right hand clearwhile Phoebe Waller Bridge instead it will be Helena, Indy’s “goddaughter”. In the cast will also be present Thomas Kretschmann, Shaunette Renee Wilson and Antonio Banderashowever, their roles are not yet known.
Indiana Jones and the Wheel of Fortune will come to the cinemas June 30, 2023.
