Golden Knights beat Capitals 4 3 OT

Golden Knights beat Capitals 4-3 (OT)

The Washington Capitals made a trip to Sin City to see if they could win gamble number seven of their last eight. Standing in their way was a desperate Vegas Golden Knights team who were in dire need of points if they were to play in the postseason.

Evgeny Kuznetsov jammed home an Alex Ovechkin blast to give the Caps an early lead. Alec Martinez sneaked a shot through Ilya Samsonov to reconnect the game. Ovechkin got his own early in the second third from a one-time feed from Kuznetsov. Evgenii Dadonov scored early in the third goal and Chandler Stephenson would follow his own to give Vegas their first lead.

Alex Ovechkin’s 50th goal of the season made up for it. Shea Theodore with a beautiful overtime record.

Golden Knights beat Capitals 4-3.

  • That first period was really a lot of fun. I thought the Caps definitely had the better overall chances after the first few minutes and probably deservedly went into the half with a lead. An offside, the most thrilling game in hockey, was the only thing standing in their way.
  • Ovi turned down a power play he was trying to earn for the Caps because he felt the call was wrong. You don’t see that often.
  • He has to do what he has to do but this is the second goal this season Yevgeny Kuznetsov robbed directly from Alex Ovechkin. Kuzy couldn’t even finish his Bird Celly because behind the Vegas net Jonathan Marchessault was his typical salty self. Ovi recorded his 40th assist of the season for the game, the first time he has reached that 40 mark since 2010–11.
  • The second period was on the other end of the spectrum in terms of fun to watch. The caps really messed up the neutral zone for Vegas, so much of the frame involved long dump-ins and passes to nobody. That’s definitely fine for the caps that held a street lead.
  • Alex Ovechkin scored his 49th and 50th goals of the season and the 779th and 780th of his career. That 50 goals is the most ever scored by a player aged 36 or older in a single season. The Great Eight has reached the 50th nine times in one season, tied with Mike Bossy and Wayne Gretzky for the most in NHL history.
  • How did everyone do on their Wordle?
  • Did you know that Chandler Stephenson Is only one point missing from 60 points this season? Forsberg, Vrana, Burakowski, Stephenson. I’m just sprinkling some nightmares right there.
  • That third period was absolutely insane. Just back and forth shinny hockey.
  • Ilya Samsonov can not allow the second goal. Just awful. He then threw his stick away just before the third and couldn’t make the stop on Stephenson without it. Such games are far too common for him. I’m more than over it.
  • Nick Dowd takes far too many penalties.

The Caps are wrapping up their road trip next in Arizona, where next season they’ll be playing NHL hockey like they’re in a high school gym because Gary Bettman has no shame.
