Johnny Hincapie (50) was wrongfully behind bars for 25 years. Now he is receiving historic damages from the City and State of New York.
US citizen Johnny Hincapie was convicted in 1990 of allegedly stabbing a tourist on a train station platform. He was accused of having committed this act as part of a group. Now he receives astronomically high compensation.
The 50-year-old was released from prison in 2015 after serving more than 25 years of his wrongfully convicted prison sentence. He then said he was forced to confess. Despite exculpatory evidence, he was convicted at the time.

Hincapie is now receiving nearly $18 million in compensation from the city and state of New York. His lawyers said it was one of the largest fines ever awarded for a wrongful conviction in New York.
During his time in prison, the man earned a bachelor’s and master’s degrees. According to attorney Gabriel P. Harvis, the 50-year-old now lives with his family in Florida and has two children.
