Despite the scandal surrounding cash found in his home, the President of the South AfricaCyril Ramaphosa, has no intention of “resigning or resigning” his spokesman Vincent Magwenya said this Saturday, March 3. Ramaphosa decided “not to resign over a false report, nor will he resign from the political front,” his spokesman reiterated. The figure of South Africa’s president has been in jeopardy since the release of a parliamentary report last Wednesday 30th. The document revealed that wads of cash totaling $508,000 were found hidden in a sofa during a robbery at one of his properties. “Due to the longterm interest and persistence of our constitutional democracy beyond Ramaphosa’s presidency, such an inaccurate report should be questioned, particularly when used to remove an incumbent head of state,” he added. The scandal began in June when a former director of intelligence, who was close to critics of Ramaphosa in his own party, filed a lawsuit against the president for hiding the robbery. Ramaphosa has always denied what happened and so far the complaint has not led to any charges. The president could become the target of an impeachment trial. Parliament meets next Tuesday 6th to vote on whether or not to activate this process. Several influential members of the African National Congress (ANC, the ruling party) have already spoken out in favor of the president.
