Damascus-. Syrian health authorities have launched an oral cholera vaccination campaign from today until the 15th, particularly in the areas with the highest infection rates.
According to the Ministry of Health, the goal is to immunize people of all ages in the provinces of Aleppo, Hasakeh, Raqa and Deir Ezzor, who are most affected by this disease, which was first detected in the country on 10 September.
Primary Health Care Director Razan Tarabishi reported that the campaign is being carried out in 63 health centers and by 685 mobile teams, and 2,269 health workers are participating.
The vaccine is safe and approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) and is being used with success and efficacy around the world, the policy said.
Syria recently received two million doses of an oral cholera vaccine provided by WHO, the United Nations Children’s Fund and the Global Vaccine Initiative.
According to the latest report released by health authorities, the total number of confirmed cases rose to 1,556 while the death toll reached 49.
They clarified that the main cause of death continues to be the delay in going to health centers to request medical assistance.
Syria has been facing an imposed war since 2011, which has affected its healthcare system and caused a deterioration in services, worsening the population’s health indices.
