Director Oliver Stone, who has been preparing a documentary about Brazil’s Presidentelect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) for three years, said the film is finished and will be released soon. “We were shooting when he was released, in Argentina, in Mexico. We also filmed the election process, Victory Day, which was the last day of shooting. I think it’s going to be interesting for international audiences, it’s an impressionistic portrait of Lula,” Stone said. The statement was made to UOL during the Red Sea International Film Festival event, which is being held in Saudi Arabia.
The 90minute documentary follows Lula’s entire life and is scheduled for release in early 2023. Stone is known for producing films about highprofile political figures such as Nixon and John Kennedy. He also signs productions such as Snowden: Hero or Traitor and Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps. The director said he was trying to show US involvement in the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff (PT) and the arrest of Lula in the documentary.
“We’re going there, but we’re not delving too deeply into the intersection of the (American) State Department with Sergio Moro and the Brazilian right. But that was a dirty story. Another of hundreds of crimes committed by the United States in South America,” Stone said.
The director says he wanted to make a documentary that would appeal to audiences in other countries. “I’ve seen Petra Costa’s The Edge of Democracy. It’s a very good film, I enjoyed it very much. But it’s a Brazilian film and it has details that American or European audiences might not care about. So my documentary is a bit broader and less detailed,” the director said.
