Biden plans to announce new aid package for Ukraine

WASHINGTON DC — President Joe Biden is set to announce a new security assistance package Thursday that will include additional artillery and ammunition for Ukraine, according to a US official, according to a US official.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly, said details of Ukraine’s latest package were being finalized.

Last week, in anticipation of a Russian offensive in eastern Ukraine, Biden approved an $800 million package that includes additional helicopters and the first shipment of US artillery.

The United States has already provided around $2.6 billion in military aid to Ukraine since Russia invaded.

When asked by reporters if he would send more artillery, Biden said “yes.”

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said Biden discussed “sending more ammunition and security aid to Ukraine” during a video call with fellow allies on Tuesday.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau; the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen; the President of the European Council, Charles Michel; French President Emmanuel Macron; Chancellor Olaf Scholz; the Prime Minister of Italy, Mario Draghi; Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida; NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg; Polish President Andrzej Duda; Romanian President Klaus Iohannis; and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson participated in the call, which lasted more than 80 minutes.
