A street gang member was caught up on his call to 911

A shootout worthy of the Wild West, in which the victim, a member of a Rivière-des-Prairies street gang, posts the scene on Snapchat and calls the police himself. By contacting 911, Andrew Luberisse turned himself in during this attack that almost took his life and allowed his arrest a few months later. He was also sentenced to three years in prison on Monday.

May 2021. Around 11:40 p.m., shots rang out on 61st Avenue in the Rivière-des-Prairies-Pointe-aux-Trembles neighborhood of Montreal.

The scene looks like it’s straight out of a movie. The driver’s side window of a black Dodge Durango vehicle was shattered from multiple bullet holes. Its occupant, Andrew Luberisse, miraculously survived without a scratch. More than a dozen bullets were fired in his direction that evening. No wonder: the criminal, nicknamed Ali Baba, is a member of the Profit Boyz street gang, which is involved in many conflicts.

His first instinct? He films himself and his car to post everything on his Snapchat and Instagram accounts.

His second instinct? Dial 911 to notify the police.

Andrew Luberisse himself called the police on the evening of May 29, 2021, we can read in a court document summarizing the facts. He then indicated that he wanted to speak to the police in connection with the shooting of his vehicle. The then 32-year-old man never showed up at the police station.

The video shot at the time of the crime can later be found in one of his rap music videos. Before the start of the track entitled Transgression (Freestyle), a sequence shows the black car riddled with bullets.

“If you shoot, we’ll shoot back,” he posted on social media shortly after the shootout.

Police closely monitored the victim for two months after she called 911. According to the ballistics report, some shots were fired from inside the car.

Andrew Luberisse was eventually arrested in August 2021 for firing a firearm. Ali Baba was in possession of a 9mm semi-automatic pistol which was found during a search of his vehicle at the time of his arrest.

Multiple provocations

Before becoming the target of this violent assassination attempt, Andrew Luberisse had long been involved in the conflict between the Profit Boyz of Rivière-des-Prairies and Zone 43, a Montreal North gang. According to Caroline Raza, a street gangs expert at the Service de Police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM), attacks on social media came from everywhere.

She had made a detailed portrait of the accused during the investigation for his release.

In the 2010s, Andrew Luberisse identified as Profit Boyz or Profit Kollectaz, she said. “In those years it was young people who stood in the parks. According to sources, Luberisse is particularly associated with an industry clique known as 40 Thievez or Four Street Runner.

Since 2011 there has been a conflict between subjects from Montreal North and Rivière-des-Prairies. A dispute between individuals ended in manslaughter. Since that time there have been various cases of attempted murder [dans ces secteurs].

Detective Sergeant Caroline Raza of the SPVM

Shortly before Andrew Luberisse’s shooting, his escapades caused a stir on social networks. “He was very active on Instagram and Snapchat. His publications are in the public domain,” said Caroline Raza.

About ten days before he was targeted, Ali Baba had released a video believed to have set the powder on fire. He had filmed himself in a vehicle on the corner of Pascal Street and Lapierre Street in north Montreal.

He’d chanted “Fuck that block, I can’t stand that damn block” while waving a green scarf, the color of his sector.

The intersection is “a significant place” for its rivals in Zone 43, Caroline Raza said. “It is seen as a lack of respect by Mr Luberisse to go there. »

Andrew Luberisse pleaded guilty to multiple gun-related charges following his arrest last spring. He was sentenced to 37 months in prison on Monday. Taking preventive detention into account, he has to spend a little over a year behind bars.
