This morning, Thursday April 21, it is 9:20 a.m. on the Bois Debout banana plantation in Capesterre-Belle-Eau when a farm worker dies suddenly. The 52-year-old man was monitoring banana trees when he fell to the ground after feeling unwell. At this point we do not yet know the exact circumstances of his death.

Management declined to comment on the matter at this time. An internal investigation will be held tomorrow, Friday April 22, to learn more about this dramatic episode.

However, this is not the first time such an accident has occurred on this farm.

On June 26, 2009, when a worker was clearing a plot of land on the plantation from the platform of a tractor, he fell from a height of 2.30 meters… A few minutes later he succumbed to his injuries.

In October 2016, a machine ran over a team leader.

Many accidents that reignite tensions between management and employees over the risks associated with working on the farm.

There were changes for sugar cane farmers, but not for those working with bananas. The workers of the banana plantations carry 7 tons of loads on their backs over 20 kilometers every day. Workers over 45 shouldn’t be carrying such heavy loads, but they aren’t.
