Prosecutors in US call for maintaining restrictive immigration policy

The current Joe Biden administration announced it would suspend that order beginning May 23, and while the administration says it is logistically prepared for an increase in the arrival of undocumented immigrants at the southern border, it has received numerous criticisms from both opponents and migrants allies of politicians.

Prosecutors are filing lawsuits against the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) over the decision to repeal Title 42, whose implementation relies on the expulsion of immigrants under the pretext of the Covid-19 pandemic, TheHill newspaper reported.

The plaintiffs, representing primarily Republican-led states, argue that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has already phased out use of this section by allowing permanent entry of citizens from countries such as Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.

Under the guise of Title 42, which some see as inhumane and xenophobic, the Trump administration has expelled 400,000 people, while the Biden administration has increased that number to 1.2 million.

More than half of the 221,000 arrested by border officials last month have been deported to Mexico or their countries of origin, according to data presented to a Texas federal court.

Analysts believe the current Oval Office resident is failing to adequately explain his administration’s approach to immigration to voters, and that this could negatively impact November’s general election.

A regional meeting on migration was held in Panama this week in the presence of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Secretary of National Security Alejandro Mayorkas, where they advocated coordinated regional action to stem the flow of migration.

Washington’s speech has been cataloged by pundits as using double standards, as successive northern governments fail to honor agreements with nations like Cuba — one of the countries not represented at the forum alongside Venezuela and Nicaragua — causing irregularities and generating migratory spikes that are being pushed through compulsion are reinforced dimensions.
