Woman rescued from refugee ship with newborn baby

A 25-year-old woman who gave birth to a boy aboard the Geo Barents rescue ship yesterday has been taken to Lampedusa with her four children. Her mother had been rescued from an inflatable boat with 90 people in distress, MSF said today. The woman was traveling with her other three children.

The pregnant woman had to spend ten hours with her children aboard an inflatable boat before being rescued by the “Geo Barents” with other refugees. Currently, 251 people are on board the ship waiting for a port of call.

No permission from Italy

“We have already made three landing requests, but we have not received any response from the competent authorities”, said the NGO. Unaccompanied minors would also be on board the ship.

Since taking office in October, the Italian government led by right-wing politician Giorgia Meloni has repeatedly refused to disembark rescue ships carrying refugees to safety in the Mediterranean for days.
