Couple tricks Walmart cashier and walks out with over $6,000 worth of goods: police

A man and woman in Georgia confused a Walmart cashier to steal more than $6,000 worth of merchandise and gift cards, according to authorities.

The couple loaded a pile of expensive items into a Walmart truck in Grovetown on Nov. 30, the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office said. When they got to the checkout, they made several card transactions, according to MPs, WRDW reported.

The two people managed to confuse the cashier when they asked that the “cash” button at the checkout be pressed in order for their credit card to work.

The tactic then resulted in the goods being called as if they were going to be paid for in cash, so their credit cards weren’t charged, WRDW reported.

They left the store with $3,400 worth of merchandise and $3,000 gift cards. The sheriff’s office is calling the incident a “theft by deception.”

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Department said in a Facebook update on the crime that a suspect has been identified.

A spokesman for the sheriff’s office told Fox News Digital Thursday that investigators had identified 19-year-old Jaylan Griggs of Flint, Michigan as a male suspect. They haven’t yet identified the female suspect.
