The European Union will support Costa Rica with migration and cyber security

At an event in the Golden Hall of Casa Amarilla, home of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship, they indicated that the EU will work with the Ministry of Science, Innovation, Technology and Telecommunications (Micitt) to combat cyberattacks.

Likewise with the Social Security Fund of Costa Rica to insure about five thousand migrants, refugees and asylum seekers.

In addition, it will support the General Directorate for Migration and Foreigners in the regularization of 2,500 people and work with the Ministry of Labor and Social Security to ensure that more than a thousand migrants have alternative access to employment.

Regarding cybersecurity, the EU and Micitt signed a memorandum of understanding to make Costa Rica a sub-regional cybersecurity hub as part of the Latin American and Caribbean Cyber ​​Capacity Center project, which Estonia is implementing through the EU cybernet as part of an international consortium.

The interim president of Costa Rica, Stephan Brunner; the European External Action Service’s Director-General for the Americas, Bryan Glynn; and the Director for Latin America and the Caribbean of the European Union’s Directorate-General for International Associations, Félix Fernández-Shaw.

Bruner indicated that Costa Rica is delighted to be part of these projects and to learn from the EU’s collective experiences on these issues, to develop local capacities and joint actions to promote the benefits of an open, free and inclusive cyberspace.

Interim Foreign Minister Lydia Peralta thanked the EU and Estonia for their willingness and stressed that this agreement is a very important tool to avoid the disruption of the provision of services by public bodies in the country and to protect people’s confidential data.

For his part, Glynn assured that they have signed their first commitment with Costa Rica as part of this Digital Alliance, which will see that country become the powerhouse for cyber skills in the Central American region.

On the other hand, the EU presented a project to expand health care and access to decent employment for migrants, refugees and refugee-seeking populations in Costa Rica who are in vulnerable circumstances, through a process of migration, health and labor regulation.

To this end, the EU will contribute €2.5 million to promote legalisation, health and decent work for people with these conditions through public bodies and alliances with companies that provide them with jobs.
