On a day like today, a Vladimir Ilyich Ulianov Lenin was born on April 22, 1870 in Simbirsk, Russia. Leader of the October Revolution, the second phase of the 1917 Russian Revolution that ended the Tsarist regime. He transformed the nationalities of the Russian Empire into republics, thus founding the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) in 1922. He introduced reforms that changed course Russia in the 20th century and prevented any opposition to his leadership. His secret police, the “Cheka”, was tasked with repressing anyone who thought or acted differently.
