Japanese singer Ichiro Mizuki, original voice on the Mazinger Z, Tekkaman, Jeeg Robot d’steel, Mechander Robot, Captain Harlock and Voltron soundtracks, has died. The Japanese singer, nicknamed the “King of Animated Songs,” died of lung cancer in a Tokyo hospital on December 6. He was 74 years old. The disappearance was announced today by his agent. Mizuki, who announced last July that he was being treated for lung cancer, sang until a few days ago: on November 27th he was on stage in a wheelchair for the last time.
The career
Mizuki, whose real name was Toshio Hayakawa, was famous for singing the theme song for the 1972 robot series Mazinger Z and Leiji Matsumoto’s space cartoon Captain Harlock, among many other hits. He debuted as a pop singer in 1968 and began his career in 1971 with anime songs. With over 1,200 songs to his credit, including the theme song of the legendary TV series Tekkaman – The Space Knight, Mizuki had gained popularity overseas as well. Conducting events in Hong Kong and Singapore.
