“I thought this would be a good opportunity to play around with her a bit,” Brayden said.
For his first of two songs in the season 22 finale of The Voice, Team Blake Shelton‘s Braden Lape performed “Humble and Kind” by Tim McGraw, which he dedicated to his hometown, which he said had supported him throughout his life. Remember, he’s only 16.
Then it was time to criticize his performance and his coach Gwen Stefani started saying, “I was thinking about what to say because I thought I’d be your #1 fan on the show.”

When she paused for a second, Brayden, whose turn it was to take a chair, interrupted her and asked, “Then why didn’t you turn around?”
A nervous Gwen said, “What are you talking about? I do not know. I can’t remember that far back, but I’ll say this. I’ve always believed in you from the start, that you have something special. Even outside of your voice. It’s just this thing that I can’t pinpoint, but I was right. Look, you’re in the finals.”
After the show, Parade got a chance to talk to Brayden and ask him what he was thinking when he confronted Gwen.
He explained: “After last week’s show, one of my friends reached out to me and said I should have said that at some point. So this week I just waited for her to say, ‘I’m such a big fan’ and then I got to play around with her. I like having a good time up there and fooling around with everyone. I thought this would be a good opportunity to play around with her a bit.”

Then Brayden continued more humbly. “It has been a great journey so far. I couldn’t be more grateful for everything, but sometimes you gotta have fun.”
The story goes on
But how did he know she had a sense of humor?
His explanation was, “If she likes Blake, she does.”
A perfect example of what he meant by that is that Blake had been messing around with Brayden in his clip pack before his performance and tightened his mic stand so tight that Brayden couldn’t adjust it to his height. He’s 6ft tall and Blake had lowered the mic so it was the right height for a child – and Brayden caught his trainer playing with him. So he probably thought it was fair to turn back, only he did it with Blake’s wife.
For his second and final competitive appearance on The Voice, Brayden performed “Wild as Her” by Cory Kent.
The Voice winner will be announced Tuesday night at the end of the two-hour special, which will feature guest appearances from Kane Brown, Karol G, Kelly Clarkson, Maluma, One Republic, Adam Lambert, BRELANDand last year’s winner, girl named Tomand begins at 9 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
