Iran: Execution of second protester’s death sentence Asia

A second protester, Majidreza Rahnavard, was executed this morning in Mashhad, Iran, on charges of killing two Basijis, members of the paramilitary force set up by Ayatollah Khomeini.

According to judicial news agency Mizan, Rahnavard was convicted of “Muharebeh” (the “war against God”) for being held in custody on November 17, during the revolt that has been ongoing since September 16, following the death of Mahsa Amini, the accused for wearing the hijab in an “improper” manner. According to human rights activists, Rhanavard was badly beaten in detention, so badly that he broke his arm upon arrest. He was later exposed on state television as confessing to the killings, according to observers and activists under pressure from authorities. He is the second protester to be executed after Mohsen Shekari, who was hanged last Thursday and also convicted of Muharebeh for taking part in a roadblock and injuring a basij during the protests.

Iran has decided to impose sanctions on 10 people and 5 European entities: Tehran’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement quoted by the Irna Agency, adding that the sanctions are in retaliation for the imposition of sanctions by the European states are. “European individuals and organizations have also supported terrorist groups and encouraged violence and terrorism, leading to terrorist attacks and human rights abuses against the Iranian people,” the statement added.
