Rumors of a new, easier-to-produce PlayStation 5 model for Sony are becoming more apparent. The floppy disk drive would be sold as an option.

For several months, rumors have been circulating about a new PlayStation 5 model. This would be the first redesign in the life of the console, which has already undergone internal design changes to facilitate its production.
The goal that Sony, like any console manufacturer, strives for is always the same: to make the console easier to manufacture, lower the construction price, have more inventory and thus increase the company’s profits.
A start in late 2023
According to Tom Henderson for Insider Gaming, Sony wants to launch this new PS5 model in fiscal year 2023, so between March 2023 and March 2024, more likely around the start of the school year in September.
This new PS5 model differs from the two consoles we currently know by using an external drive that aims to be connected via USB-C. The console would also have a new USB-C port on the back.
For Sony, this means that the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition will now be a single, mass-produced console. Just the presence of an external drive in the box can make all the difference. Manufacturing steps for the brand that is still struggling to supply the market as well as it would like.
Tom Henderson is already known in the community for numerous leaks, especially regarding Battlefield and Call of Duty licenses. It remains to be seen if his sources will prove just as reliable when it comes to Sony. All of this has yet to be proven.
A console already in a few hands
However, according to Tom Henderson on Twitter, the new console would already be in the hands of a few users, likely Sony employees at this point. The console would work “without any problems” and Sony should soon formalize the machine.
Small update on the PlayStation 5 having a removable disc drive – I’ve heard from two people now that the test kit is in their hands and it’s “working perfectly”. We should hear more about this officially soon.https://t.co/2rzlDrjYAb

If this console overhaul really has a September release slated, it’s hard to imagine Sony revealing it well in advance. Something doesn’t seem quite right with Tom Henderson’s schedule. It remains only to wait to discover the final word.
