Govinda Naam Mera Film Review: Vicky Kaushal-Kiara Advani’s film feels stretched out, forgettable

A huge bungalow in the heart of Mumbai worth hundreds of millions. Several hopeful applicants. And lots of fun. Wait, scratch the last piece. ‘Govinda Naam Mera’ is meant to be a fleet-footed caper, but the laughter remains strictly sporadic.

This crowded ensemble looks like it’s primed for fun and games, but is left meandering in a ramshackle storyline. Govind A Waghmare aka Govinda (Vicky Kaushal) is a wannabe choreographer who shuttles between film sets where he dances behind the hero and keeps the mood of his wheelchair-using “aai” (Renuka Shahane). That is, when he’s not bouncing back and forth between his domineering “biwi” Gauri (Bhumi Pednekar), his demanding girlfriend Suku (Kiara Advani), and his legal pal (Amey Wagh).

A stubborn mother and son, the latter a dead ringer for Dhanush, circle closer to the grand prize. When it comes to property, can a smart builder be far behind? And can a corrupt cop (Dayanand Shetty) be kept at bay? As if that wasn’t enough, a businessman (Sayyaji Shinde, mostly seen in a dressing gown reminiscent of old villains) and his young boy with a habit (Jeeva) bring some cheap villains to the table. There’s a shady insurance guy (Viraj Ghelani) who knows about a lucrative policy. And then, dhan-tan-a-aan, there’s a corpse. who is the killer And who takes everyone else to the post office?

This should have been a riot. It feels like each of these characters should have had a moment or two that they could own. What’s the point of scammers trying to get a quick one on each other? But you have a hard time recalling a standout sequence in the two-hour and slightly longer film, which feels longer than it should almost immediately after it starts. A character reportedly living with the debilitating effects of a stroke raises laughs. In earnest. Even the songs and dances depicted on the agile couple Kaushal and Advani are unforgettable. That’s the way the movie is.
