Peru: Ex President Castillo to be imprisoned for 18 months

Former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo will remain in prison for 18 months. This was decided by the Tribunal for Preliminary Investigations, which granted the request of the Peruvian Attorney General. Castillo is accused of rebellion and a coup attempt. After listening to the speeches
For nearly two hours, Judge Juan Carlos Checkley Soria read the prosecution and defense the arguments supporting his decision to allow the prosecution’s motion against Castillo.

The judge, reports La Republica newspaper, specified that the former head of state must remain in prison until June 6, 2024, a decision that Castillo’s defense immediately appealed. The Attorney General formulated his charges on that basis
an attempted coup carried out by Castillo in his speech to the nation last December 7th, when he announced the dissolution of Parliament, the start of a constitutional reform process and a substantive installation of all Peruvian judicial authorities.

And in the meantime The death toll in the riots that broke out across Peru following the arrest of the former president has continued to escalate in recent hours. The victims are now 18. On the seventh day of protests and strikes alone and the first day of the introduction of the state of emergency, nine deaths were reported in the regions of Apurímac, Arequipa, La Libertad and Ayacucho as a result of clashes between protesters and members of the national police. This intensification of the conflict has prompted the government to impose a curfew of at least five days in 15 provinces in the country.

Yesterday was a particularly tough day in Ayacucho, where protesters fought with the police and army to take control of the airport. The government of that region last night released a statement accusing President Dina Boluarte and the interior and defense ministers of death and calling for their “immediate resignation”. The document also calls for an immediate cessation of the use of firearms and repression by the armed forces and police.
