The explosion in the Radisson Hotel in Berlin: The 16 meter high aquarium was a tourist attraction. The causes are still unknown. At least 100 firefighters were on duty
The huge aquarium at a Berlin hotel not far from Alexanderplatz exploded just before 6 a.m. this morning, injuring two people, according to German newspaper Bild.
The large tank, 16 meters high, contained 1,500 tropical fish and is a major tourist attraction in the German capital, also given the elevator that crosses it inside.
The water is running onto the street, tweeted the police, who intervened on site together with a hundred firefighters.
The reasons for the explosion are not yet clear, but a first hypothesis focuses on the wear and tear of the material.
The aquarium is visited by thousands of people every year: if the explosion had happened just a few hours later, the toll could have been much higher.

The water – we’re talking a million liters – also spilled onto the road, causing problems for morning traffic. The aquarium – whose name is Aquadom – had a diameter of 11.5 meters and a glass elevator was installed inside to better observe all the fish. It was located in the Radisson Blu Hotel and in the complex next to the hotel there are offices, a restaurant and the Sea Life Center Aquarium in Berlin. The aquarium’s explosion was so violent that it was also picked up by the city’s seismographs at around 5:43 a.m., shattering doors and windows.
The certificates
Musician Iva Yudinski, one of about 350 guests at the hotel, told Bild that I heard a huge explosion around 6 a.m. I didn’t even understand what happened. I saw the aquarium and all the destruction. All flooded with water.
The Berlin fire brigade has asked the guests to leave the hotel. The city’s traffic information system said the facility’s route was closed.
The characteristics of the aquarium
The Aqua Dom building is considered to be the largest cylindrical aquarium in the world.
According to dpa, it was completely modernized in 2020.
The aquarium contained 100 different species. The liquid escaping from the vertical tank would have reached the third floor of the hotel.
