Big Broadside in Quebec: Here are 8 tips to avoid injuring yourself shoveling

The storm expected this weekend will inevitably force the return of shovels and snowblowers: take care not to hurt yourself, launches the Association of Chiropractors of Quebec.

After the storm’s passage on Friday and Saturday, intermittent snow and accumulations are also expected in several regions of Quebec on Sunday to end the weekend on a wintry note.

For some, that new white carpet means hours of shoveling snow over the weekend and some soreness the next day.

But shoveling snow would also injure 31% of Canadians, the ACQ estimated in a press release.

The latter also explains that every year, with each heavy snowfall, chiropractors see an increase in consultations for patients with pain in the lower back, neck and shoulders.

Here are the 8 mistakes to avoid to reduce your risk of injury and pain, according to ACQ:

  • Take large shovels that are difficult to push or lift
  • Throw snow over your shoulder
  • Using a shovel that is the wrong size or too heavy
  • Hurry up to finish quickly
  • Wait out the storm before shoveling so you don’t have to start over
  • Neglecting to warm up before paddling
  • Rotate only the torso to lay the snow down
  • Arch your back and keep your knees straight to lift a shovel
