In South Africa, the ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC), will determine its leader and thus the country’s likely future head of state on Saturday. The current party and head of state, President Cyril Ramaphosa, is once again the favorite for the ANC presidency. He could also serve as president for a second term if the ANC wins the 2024 election, as expected.

Ramaphosa’s only competitor in the ANC Congress is former Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, who, however, is embroiled in a corruption scandal and has little chance. Around 4,500 delegates attend the five-day party conference near Johannesburg. After 28 years in power, the ANC recently lost votes. However, with 230 out of 400 seats in the National Assembly, it remains South Africa’s largest party.
