«The Big Day», childhood friends in life and this story is all about the family celebrating their children’s wedding (with third wheel by Baglio). The fall of illusions, disillusionment, betrayal. But life opens other doors
A film (also) melancholic? Aldo, Giovanni and Giacomo say why not. With Il grande giorno, the three are with us again for the Christmas holidays, same copies of Once Upon a Time, 600, same director, Massimo Venier, same distributor, Medusa releasing it on the 22nd, and the manager Giampaolo Letta hopes that in the Blockbuster gaps slip: “If Avatar allows us to earn something…”. Veterans of the chaste and slightly old-fashioned good humor. Down with nudity and vulgarity, as always. But also about the goblin-wide gestures, the “faces”. But after 31 years of their partnership, there is still stage fright. Giacomo: «My legs make me Giacomo Giacomo, you never know how we will be perceived. We defeat the habit by lengthening the times of reunions, each of us does different things ». Giovanni: «The future is uncertain, we try to plan for the present, so we don’t think about it». Aldo: “When we see each other, there is always a spark.”
Titled The Big Day, it celebrates the marriage between Giovanni and Lucia Muscino’s daughter and Giacomo and Antonella Attili’s son. However, Lucia (instantly referred to as «vintage Barbie», «she sure is a bit heavy», she rightly comments) is his ex-wife. At the wedding he shows up with Aldo, his new partner. Giacomo and Giovanni have known each other forever in the film as in life, they are partners, they deal in furniture. The children’s wedding is the seal of their friendship, they want it like in a fairy tale, on Lake Como, fireworks, sings Francesco Renga, star chefs. Aldo wreaks havoc with Gaffes, and we’re on the weird side. Discomfort with wind. The melancholic chapter in a story about family, aging parents and growing children should be treated with caution: this also causes unrest in the Christmas income.
The fall of illusions, disillusionment, betrayal, everything ends: but other doors open. “They find each other the moment they say goodbye and thanks to that they will live a happy life,” adds Venier. He takes clues that the life of the trio offers, for example what Giovanni said at his daughter’s (real) wedding: “I mentioned Mulan, the cartoon, when the father, crying, says that my little girl is grown up ». “My character doesn’t see a painful feeling of life that belongs to me,” says Antonella Attili, newcomer, who says, “Actors bored me, on the set they never celebrated themselves, Giovanni always talked about botany … “.
