The head of Twitter, Elon Musk, wants to lift the internationally criticized blocking of several journalists’ accounts with the short message service. The billionaire and Tesla founder announced this today via tweet in response to a short-term Twitter poll in which 58.7% of respondents said they wanted recently blocked accounts unlocked immediately.
“People have spoken. Accounts that posted my location will now be unblocked,” Musk tweeted.
Twitter on Thursday blocked the accounts of several American journalists who had recently reported on Musk. Musk accused them of sharing the real-time location of his private jet, violating a ban on sharing personal information known as “doxing”. Such behavior endangers the safety of his family, Musk said.
The EU Commission criticized the procedure and said it was considering the consequences out of concern for press freedom. Criticism also came from the governments of France, Britain and Germany, as well as the United Nations.
