The Dallas Cowboys may be close to signing one of the most sought-after free agents of all time, Odell Beckham Jr., but that didn’t stop owner Jerry Jones from asking the dressing room for their thoughts on the deal ahead of the postseason.

The Cowboys are reportedly still leading the race to sign Beckham Jr., making a late run for him despite hiring another veteran wide receiver in TY Hilton, 33, in early December.

It seems like Jones recently wanted to make sure the team’s pursuit of the 30-year-old free agent didn’t get out of hand. A source told NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport that the 80-year-old asked the newly signed Hilton, “How would you feel if we signed Beckham, too?”

According to Rapoport, Hilton’s response was music to the Cowboys’ owner’s ears.

“This is great,” said the ex-Colts star. “I’m here to win a Super Bowl.”

Meanwhile, the Cowboys and Beckham Jr. face a stumbling block in negotiating a deal, according to Rapoport.

Beckham is looking for guaranteed cash for both this year and next, but Dallas is reluctant to allocate that much salary to the 30-year-old, who is said to be still recovering from a cruciate ligament injury while playing in the Super Bowl, according to LVI in February.

The ex-Giants, Browns and Rams are believed to be a few weeks away from returning to the field.

While there is no agreement on a potential deal, Jones has publicly shared his admiration for Beckham’s talent and is confident the Cowboys will get a deal across the line for the first round of the 2012 NFL draft.

“Odell will be joining us,” Jones told USA Today on Thursday. “There’s a good chance he will, with the full goal of getting ready for a playoff game or two, and then I’ll look to the future. But most of it is now.’

Although both sides seem to be getting closer to an agreement, time is not exactly on Dallas’ side. The Cowboys have just three games left before the end of the regular season and are said to be reluctant to play Beckham Jr. in the playoffs.

On Sunday, Dallas lost 34-40 to the Jacksonville Jaguars but still secured a spot in the wildcard playoffs despite the loss.

The Cowboys now meet the 13-1 Philadelphia Eagles on Christmas Eve.
