The Copa Libertadores will no longer award a direct third party

The 2023 season of international club tournaments in Conmebol (Copa Libertadores and South American Cup) will bring about important changes, especially for the second of these competences. The region’s football association announced changes for classification into the group stage and round of 16 of the “Suda”, including the elimination of the direct ticket for the best 16 for the teams that finish third in the main competition.

In the past three years it has become common for the teams that failed to qualify for the next leg of the Libertadores because they finished third in their group to be given a second chance at remaining international by receiving a direct pass into the round of 16 received … his sister competition. That will no longer be the case.

Now these clubs have to play a direct elimination key with the second of the groups in the South Americans, which is no longer automatically eliminated. This measure may have been taken in response to criticism from fans and journalists of the previous system, which they described as unfair.

Changes to qualify for the South American group stage

The other change announced concerns the first phase of the tournament (national phase), in which the four teams from all affiliated countries (except Argentina and Brazil) will play against each other for two places in the group round. Previously these clashes were two games, but from now on it will be a single game with the location determined by lottery.
