Reports: Kaili’s Partial Confession in Corruption Scandal

According to media reports, the arrested ex-Vice-President of the European Parliament Eva Kaili made a partial confession in the EU corruption scandal. As reported today by the daily newspapers “Le Soir” and “La Repubblica”, citing investigation documents, the 44-year-old Greek admitted, among other things, that she had instructed her father to hide large sums of money before being arrested.

“She claims that she knew about her husband’s activities with Mr. Panzeri in the past and that suitcases of money were smuggled into his apartment,” the investigating judge is also quoted in the documents.

Kaili is currently in custody in Belgium, as is her partner, former Italian MP Antonio Panzeri. His father was arrested by investigators on Dec. 9 trying to hide a suitcase full of cash in a Brussels hotel after Kaili alerted him to a full-scale operation by Belgian investigators. Kaili also tried to alert two MEPs, write the two newspapers.

When asked by Le Soir and La Repubblica, their lawyer, Andre Risopoulos, said he was personally outraged that they were given access to the documents. He did not confirm that the testimony was a partial confession.
