He was jailed last year after tricking two elderly men – Peter Martin, 91, and Peter Haynes, 81 – into giving him money by posing as a financial investor.

The scammer persuaded his victims to let their money be invested for them, and then sold expensive restaurants, hotels, clothing and even a personalized license plate on his Mercedes.

Sammy’s victims had been clients of his when he was a senior trader at Equine Global Sports Limited, a company that later went into liquidation.

The company received money from customers with whom it would place horse racing bets on their behalf.

After that company went out of business, Sammy contacted two of his older former clients and pretended to continue investing their money in the same way, but instead used it to fund his lavish lifestyle, leaving a victim “on the poverty line.”

Mr Martin, who lived in Havant, Hampshire, died in November last year aged 91 while Mr Haynes was suffering from Alzheimer’s.

On 14 July 2021, Sammy, from Rayleigh, Essex, who had dismissed all charges before a last-minute plea change, was sentenced to 42 months in prison on five counts of fraud totaling £33,919.

Prosecutors said Sammy “groomed” his elderly victims and likened his scam to “a fox that gets a key to the chicken coop” and said Mr Martin considered the scam artist “a friend until he died”.

Prosecutor Mike Mason said: “This was a very nasty scam against two men that Mr Kimmence deliberately targeted.

“He targeted them because they were old, vulnerable and somewhat isolated.

“He didn’t come here because of a friendship. That was something he had planned.”
