Media concentration affects democracy says Atilio Boron

Costa Rica and France will co chair the UN Conference on Oceans

According to the Costa Rican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Chan said the decision came after the unanimous adoption of Resolution A/77/L.40 at the United Nations convening the conference, which had more than 70 co-sponsors from other states.

For the Ambassador of Costa Rica, the selection of both countries shows that her call to address the alarming state of the ocean has been heard.

He pointed out that France and Costa Rica have developed solid cooperation in key areas of the environmental agenda to defend the future of the planet and oceans and to participate as partners in various initiatives promoting a sustainable maritime policy.

Both countries, he continued, have recognized that this third conference is an opportunity to promote action and commitment to the oceans in order to fully achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14, which aims to conserve marine resources by reducing pollution to reach.

Chan pointed out that in order to achieve this SDG, we must continue to advance the sustainable relationship of humans with the ocean through an ambitious blue diplomacy agenda to address major challenges such as the severe climate crisis and the accelerated loss of marine biodiversity.

Also, plastic pollution, unsustainable fishing, overfishing and unreported and unregulated illegal fishing, and threats such as the possible start of underwater mining in international waters, he continued, are forcing us to move from ambition to action, both globally and nationally.

The Costa Rican Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that Costa Rica will host civil society organizations involved in the process a year before the Third UN Conference on the Ocean.

With this, this Central American nation wants to ensure a wide presence of different actors such as young people, artisanal fishing communities, academics, scientists, private companies and delegates from governmental and non-governmental organizations both at the event in 2024 and at the conference in next year France.
