A woman was horrified after she claimed her mother revealed the intimate details of her “messy divorce” in a family Christmas letter sent to 500 people – most of whom she barely knew.
Laura Kinney, 30, of Atlanta, Georgia, recently opened up about the uncomfortable ordeal on TikTok, where it quickly went viral, and she explained that her mother, Caroline, sends out a Christmas card to almost everyone in her town every year.
She also includes a “newsletter” with an “update” on “everything that’s going on in her family’s life.”
And while Laura said the letters usually focus on the positive and exciting things that have happened — like her brother got a new dog or they’re going on a cool trip together — this year her mom decided to send all 500 recipients to let you know that she has recently gone through a difficult breakup.

TMI? This year, Laura’s mom decided to let all 500 recipients know that she’d recently gone through a tough breakup
Laura claimed on the video-streaming platform that she and her husband of two years, Jake, decided to end their marriage over the summer – and it certainly wasn’t pretty.
TMI? Laura’s mother, Caroline’s VERY personal Christmas letter that included intimate details about her divorce
“Our 2022 could probably best be described as ‘a year of the unexpected,’ for better or for worse,” the letter began.
“You know the saying, ‘The best plans of mice and humans often go awry.’ But honestly, isn’t that just life?”
It is further explained that Laura and her husband of two years Jake moved together earlier this year to Sevierville, Tennessee, where they both got jobs as performers at the Dolly Parton-themed amusement park Dollywood.
“Everything seemed fine. But unfortunately it wasn’t,” the note continued. “Long story short, Jake no longer needed or wanted to be married.
“He turned down all counseling proposals, declared he wanted a divorce, and started living as if he were single (to put it kindly). Laura was blind and devastated.’
Caroline explained that Laura ended her summer contract with Dollywood before returning to Atlanta, where she now works at Simplicity Pediatric Therapy.
“Overall, she’s doing pretty well, although a lot of healing is still needed,” she concluded.
“Their divorce became final on September 19, two days before their three-year wedding anniversary.
“It was hard to see someone we love so dearly go through such a painful time. But I’m thankful she’s out of this toxic relationship.
And now, the 2022 Christmas letter from the Kinneys contained almost every aspect of what led to Laura and Jake’s split, as well as the heartbreak and devastation Laura felt afterwards.

Laura explained on TikTok that her mom felt like “let all her readers know” what happened because they “couldn’t just miss someone on the Christmas card with no explanation.”
“I grew up in a very traditional family in the south, we send Christmas cards to 500 different families – some of them know us, some of them don’t know us at all,” she said in a video about the letter.
“The Christmas card has a picture, but also a 10-point Times New Roman, a space, a double-sided letter – like a newsletter, a family update on everything that’s going on in my family’s life.

Laura said her mum needed to “let all her readers know” what happened because they “couldn’t just miss someone on the Christmas card with no explanation.”
Reading the note, Laura (seen with her parents) said she was “not thrilled with the information” being shared with so many people
“Every year it’s really exciting, like ‘We took a trip to Alaska,’ or ‘Laura graduated from college,’ or ‘Travis has a dog,’ all very exciting things.
However, she knew it would likely bring some entertainment to many readers, so she agreed to let her mother ship it
“I had a little bit of a year in 2022… and this year [my mom said] We can’t just leave someone missing from the Christmas card with no explanation – although I really would have liked to have pretended nothing happened.”
Laura told her followers that she wishes her mom would write something like “Laura has moved back to Georgia and no more questions” instead.
“But no, we can’t because I have the most passive, aggressive Southern mom in the whole world,” she joked.
The newly single TikToker added that she’s been dreading the Christmas report ever since her marriage ended.
“I panicked about this newsletter,” she continued. “Since May, June, when I knew I wasn’t going to be getting married around Christmas time and that this year was going to be totally dooy to cover.”
Reading the note, Laura said she was “not thrilled with the information” being shared with so many people, but knew it would likely bring some entertainment to many readers, so she agreed to have her mom send it out leave.
“If my trauma from 2022 can bring some joy to these 500 strangers, then I can [whatever will be, will be] I guess,” she said

“Remember my mom once included ALL the details of my messy divorce in our family Christmas letter? ‘Cause the same,” she captioned the clip
“I don’t think a lot of people need to know that much information about me,” she explained.
“However, if I were the recipient of such a letter, it would be the best thing I have ever received.
“I would frame it, I would open a bottle of wine, it would be immaculate, I would love to receive that.
“So if my trauma from 2022 can bring these 500 strangers a little joy – for the most part – by hearing my mom say absolutely true things that happened over the summer [whatever will be, will be] I guess.’
“Remember my mom once included ALL the details of my messy divorce in our family Christmas letter? Because soon,” she captioned the clip, which has since been viewed more than 341,000 times.
Many people were quick to flood the comments section with some of their own Christmas letter horror.

“My grandpa’s crazy wife once wrote in hers after my grandmother died how my uncle was murdered in his front yard and no arrests were made,” revealed one viewer.
“Same thing… And then my mom added a list of all the divorces in our family, including aunts, uncles, and cousins — and the years they were divorced,” added another.
“My 80-year-old southern aunt sent out, ‘It’s been a great year for me but not so much for my ex-husband who passed away this year,'” said another.
“I found out through my aunt’s Christmas letter last year that my cousin was getting a divorce. It was very vague which I respect but oh I wanted more tea,” joked another user.
A fifth comment read: “My passive-aggressive mom from Alabama announced my divorce on last year’s Christmas card! Without a warning to me. You’re not alone.’
