A young Ukrainian woman was shot dead as she was returning from a food delivery dog shelter near Kyiv.
Anastasia Yalanskaya was one of three volunteers who delivered food to Bucha, about 18 miles from the Ukrainian capital. According to media reports, all three died.
Yalanskaya’s friends and family believe that her car was deliberately fired on by Russian forces at close range.
“I asked her to be especially careful. That in our time a mistake is very expensive, ”said her husband Yevgeny Yalansky. “But she helped everyone around. I asked her to think about evacuation, but she didn’t listen.”
Bucha was targeted by Russian bombardments. The shelter Yalanskaya delivered to had no food for three days when she set out on her journey.
Her latest Instagram story, posted just hours before her death, shows her sitting in the back seat of a car, smiling at the camera, next to bags of dog food.

Her car was found riddled with bullets near the home of one of the men she volunteered with. They delivered dog food and almost made it home when they were killed.

Yalanskaya’s body remains in a morgue in Bucha because the fighting is so intense that no one can get through, a friend told Global News.
“She was one of the best people I knew. She was determined to help, to help her friends and relatives and anyone who needed help,” her husband said.
“She loved animals. We had a dog and a cat. She was the best partner I have ever had.”
