While the world mourned Shane Warne’s death on social media, fans flooded the cricket.com.au Twitter post to celebrate the Australian legend’s cricketing career. An Australian cricket Twitter account posted a video from 1999 of England captain Alec Steward asking Warne to sneak into the center and help calm the hostile MCG crowd. Tensions rose during the Australian innings when bottles and golf balls were thrown towards English fielders from part of the crowd. The game was also stopped at one point for nearly five minutes and trash began to pour in overseas.

It wasn’t until a helmeted intervention by Warne that the crowd calmed down and Ricky Ponting and Mark Waugh won matches for Australia. The Australians successfully pursued the goal in 178 runs and defeated England in a crowded MCG.

Reacting to the video, one fan praised Warne and complimented his hair and bowling style.

“I’m so sad that Australia is our rival for eternity today, but I can’t tell you how much we love Warney, from his bowling style to his hair to his hair just devastated,” a fan wrote.

“I can’t stomach the fact that Warne is no more. He is the beloved Australian of the Indians. Every child of the 90s copied his actions on the ground. Spin Wizard. The world of cricket is poorer without him,” wrote another fan.

Warne appeared for Australia in 145 Test matches and took 708 wickets, making him the second highest scoring player in Tests behind Mattia Muralitaran. Also a World Cup winner, he took 293 wickets in 194 ODI games.
