BEIJING, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) — China has decided to take countermeasures and sanction two Americans in response to the United States’ action on Dec. 9 against two Chinese officials over alleged human rights issues related to Tibet.

In accordance with China’s anti-foreign sanctions law, the country has decided to take countermeasures against Miles Maochun Yu and Todd Stein, the foreign ministry said on Friday.

All types of assets they own in China will be frozen. Organizations or individuals in China are prohibited from conducting transactions with these individuals. According to the ministry, both individuals and their immediate family members are barred from entering China.

The countermeasures came into force on Friday.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning was asked to comment on China’s sanctions during a daily press briefing.

“The United States has illegally sanctioned Chinese officials under the pretext of so-called human rights issues related to Tibet, seriously interfering in China’s internal affairs and violating basic norms that govern international relations,” Mao said.

The spokeswoman said China has expressed firm opposition and strongly condemned the United States’ actions.

Tibetan affairs are purely China’s internal affairs, and the United States has neither the right nor the qualification to interfere arbitrarily, he said.

“Crude interference in China’s internal affairs will be resolutely opposed by China,” Mao said, adding that the country has urged the US side to lift its sanctions and stop interfering in Tibetan affairs and China’s internal affairs.
