Carson Wentz is behind center again.
After two turnovers from Taylor Heinicke in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s game against the 49ers, head coach Ron Rivera benched Heinicke in favor of Wentz.
According to NBCSportsWashington.com’s JP Finlay, Heinicke was “visibly angry” after speaking to Rivera on the sidelines.
Heinicke was stripped deep in Washington territory by Nick Bosa to end a drive early in the fourth quarter. Then Heinicke was intercepted by defenseman Jimmie Ward in Washington’s next series. Heinicke’s pass was apparently intended for Brian Robinson, but didn’t get close to the running back.
Wentz’s first pass was not a knocked-down ball to tight end Logan Thomas on the right touchline. After Jonathan Williams ran 9 yards, Wentz converted the third and 1 with a quick pass to Curtis Samuel on the left.
Then Wentz came out of a sack by sending Williams a backhand flip that went 21 yards down to the San Francisco 48-yard line.
The 49ers were apparently content to let the commanders pull everything under them, with Wentz quickly getting the ball out of his hands.
But in third and tenth on the San Francisco 20, Wentz met Curtis Samuel as he ran into the corner of the end zone for a 20-yard touchdown pass. But Wentz was fired on Nick Bosa’s two-point try to keep the 49ers’ lead at 10 points.
