The aim is, in times of depression and discouragement, “above all to eliminate loneliness,” explains André Faucher, founder of the organization Un coeur pour les autres.

“This is the worst time for us,” says the founder.

More than 300 gifts were distributed throughout the day to bring some warmth and comfort to those less fortunate.

“We believe that we make the difference,” Mr. Faucher is convinced.

Grocery baskets and meals were donated.

“A helping hand in difficult times is greatly appreciated,” says one beneficiary of the charity.

The Christmas season is not synonymous with joy for everyone.

“Whether you’re homeless or not, there can be a level of distress that only increases when you’re homeless,” says Émilie Fortier, director of emergency services at The Old Brewery Mission.

Homeless shelters have been overcrowded for weeks. In addition, says Ms Fortier, “this week is even more delicate given the weather cocktail that we have. We see a certain need.

“We’re out all night 8 times out of 10,” said a Montrealer seeking solace at the kiosk.

“We see that there is suffering,” says Faucher.

A few people in a vulnerable situation were asked what their biggest wishes are this holiday season and here is what they said:

“Money”, “May it get a little better” and “Housing”.
