“Serious” death toll in attacks in Odessa
- A Russian attack in the Ukrainian Black Sea city of Odessa killed at least five people, including a baby, and wounded 18 others, Kyiv said.
- “Those are just the ones we could find. It is likely that the death toll will be high,” the head of Ukraine’s Presidential Office, Andriy Yermak, told Telegram.
The battle rages in the east
- Authorities in two eastern Ukrainian regions are reporting “bitter” fighting with Russian forces as hopes of a ceasefire over the Orthodox Easter weekend fade.
- The governor of the eastern Kharkiv region, Oleg Sinegubov, told Telegram that after “fierce fighting” Ukrainian forces recaptured three villages near the Russian border.
Evacuation of Mariupol
- A fresh attempt to evacuate Ukrainian civilians from war-torn Mariupol has failed, an aide to the city’s mayor said on his Telegram channel, blaming Russian forces.
- The official said 200 Mariupol residents had gathered to be evacuated, but the Russian military had told them to disperse and warned of possible shelling. Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of repeatedly failing to evacuate people from Mariupol.
Zelenskyy to meet senior US officials
- The President of Ukraine said he will meet with the US Secretary of State and Defense Minister in Kyiv on Sunday.
- President Volodymyr Zelenskyi did not immediately provide further details about Antony Blinken and Lloyd Austin’s visit. The White House declined to comment.
UN chief meets with Putin, Zelenskyy
- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is due to meet Zelenskyy in Ukraine next week after stopping in Moscow to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
- Guterres will meet Zelenskyy and Ukraine’s foreign minister on Thursday, two days after his visit to Moscow.
Almost 5.2 million flee
- The number of Ukrainians who have fled the country since the Russian invasion now stands at 5,163,686, the UN refugee agency says.
Russia breaks silence over sunken cruiser
- Russia said one crew member died and 27 were missing after the Moskva missile cruiser sank last week, Moscow’s first admission of losses after the tragedy. “As a result of a fire on April 13, the Moskva missile cruiser was severely damaged by the detonation of ammunition,” the Defense Ministry said.
- A senior Pentagon official said the Moscow River was hit by two Ukrainian missiles before sinking.
Thale’s accusation
- A senior Ukrainian official accused French defense electronics company Thales of violating European sanctions and selling Russian equipment used to kill civilians fleeing recent fighting outside Kyiv – allegations the company strongly denies.
- “A family tried to flee but was killed by Russian assassins,” tweeted Presidential Advisor Mykhaylo Podolyak. “Killed, now proven, with French arms sold in 2015, circumventing sanctions.”
Russia jails opposition leaders
- Russian authorities declared opposition politician Vladimir Kara-Murza a “foreign agent” and ordered his pre-trial detention for allegedly spreading false information about the Russian army.
- Moscow’s Basmanny District Court ordered the 40-year-old anti-Kremlin detention until June 12.
Security meeting in Ukraine
- The Pentagon invited 40 allies to meet in Germany next week to discuss Ukraine’s longer-term security needs.
- Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said defense secretaries and senior generals from 20 countries, NATO and non-NATO members, had already accepted the invitation to Tuesday’s meeting.
Mariupol forces pressed for surrender
- The Russian Defense Ministry said it was ready for a humanitarian ceasefire at the Azovstal Steel Plant if Kiev’s soldiers surrendered there.
- “All soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, militants of the national battalions and foreign mercenaries who have laid down their arms are guaranteed life, appropriate treatment in accordance with international law and the provision of quality medical care,” Putin said.
- “But the Kiev regime does not allow this opportunity to be used.”
