The person, a man according to local media, was taken to the hospital. There are no other injuries to report.
A person set himself on fire outside the US Supreme Court on Friday, prompting his evacuation by helicopter, a High Court spokeswoman confirmed to AFP.
“Around 6:30 p.m. local time, a person walked onto the esplanade in front of the Supreme Court building and set himself on fire,” a spokeswoman for the country’s top judicial body said in a statement. “A medical helicopter landed on the Esplanade and the person was evacuated to a local hospital,” the same source said.
No injuries
No one else was injured and the area was closed to investigations on Friday. The event was not considered a threat to public safety, Supreme Court services stressed.
According to the broadcaster Fox, it is a man, but no details about his health, his identity or the reasons for his gesture were released on Friday evening.
This drama comes two days after the Capitol was evacuated due to a false air threat.
The reported threat was actually just U.S. Army paratroopers being dropped from a plane to attend a pre-game show at the ballpark less than 1 mile from the Capitol.
