Aespa make their Coachella debut

On Saturday night, management company and record label 88rising once again brought K-pop to the Coachella main stage with a performance by girl group Aespa. The quartet – Karina, Winter, Giselle and Ningning – debuted in November 2020 amid the pandemic, which hasn’t exactly given them many live performance opportunities. That meant Aespa’s second-weekend appearance at Coachella – part of 88rising’s Head in the Clouds Forever Showcase – was a highly anticipated event.

Aespa’s set was announced shortly after the end of the first weekend when social media posts teasing a trip to LA sparked wild speculation among fans. Although the group performed at last year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, tonight’s performance was much larger, with crowds of fans showing up in Aespa gear to give the girls a warm welcome.

Aespa started their set with “aenergy”, the opener of their first mini-album Savage, and then played the debut track “Black Mamba”, accompanied by pyrotechnics and lasers and a video screen flashing a neon jungle concept. Aespa stormed through her latest hit Savage, but the real treat for Coachella-goers was the reveal of Life’s Too Short. The quartet performed an English version of the unreleased track rumored to be on their forthcoming album.

“Life’s too short for hate!” they yelled before merging into the track, a cute pop song that shows another side of Aespa, with a chorus that reads, “I don’t care/And I don’t care.” no matter what you say about it / And I don’t care, It doesn’t matter if you like it or not / I’m having so much fun with it / Why would I ever stop.” During the closer set “Next Level,” the girls nodded to the moment and changed the “What’s the name?” Black mamba!” part of “Where are we? Coachella!” as the crowd yelled their approval.

Fans can catch Aespa’s set when the Head in the Clouds Forever showcase streams on the Coachella-curated YouTube channel starting at 10:00 p.m. PT / 1:00 a.m. ET
