Most people celebrate their birthday with balloons, cake and maybe a celebratory party, but if you’re Helena Christensen it’s all about communicating with the water. The 54-year-old supermodel honored her big day with a cold swim in the harbor.

We don’t know how this Christmas baby managed it because the water was obviously cold, but it’s her way of recognizing her privilege of another year on this earth. The video clip showed Christensen walking towards the harbor wall in a Barbie pink dress. She looked stunning in feminine design with big puff sleeves and bare feet. Unboxing her outfit, the fashion icon revealed a curve-hugging black swimsuit underneath.

The fashion icon took the bold plunge by carefully descending the ladder and throwing herself into the water with her mouth wide open. She gasped quickly as she hinted at how cold it was as she dunked her head under the water. She is much braver than us! Christensen captioned her Instagram post with a sweet note: “Happy birthday to me. another swim around the sun.”

Christensen has revealed over those years that she’s always had a “deep longing” to be near the water since she was young. “I want to be there and be there as much as possible,” she told British Vogue. “When I go into the state, as soon as I get there I run to the river and throw myself in. It makes me feel alive.” Well, that cold plunge certainly reminded her of how alive she was, but it’s a wonderful tradition for someone who feels so connected to the soothing vibration of water—no matter what the temperature.
