“We can only live in relative peace and security in Kyiv because the fighters of the Azov Battalion held back the Russian invasion on the coast of the Sea of Azov last spring.” The father of a fighter from the Azov battalion, Yevhen Sukharnikov, who was captured by Putin’s soldiers, speaks. Members and supporters of the regiment, which became famous for its resistance to Russian forces in Mariupol this spring, gathered in Kyiv’s central Sofia Square to create a performance that brought the world to the conditions of 700 to remind prisoners who are still in Russian hands after the surrender of Azovstal. A table was set in the square with dishes from the typical Orthodox Christmas menu: ravioli, salads, desserts. In the middle of the table, barbed wire acts as a barrier between the dishes and the guests gathered around the table. Behind it is a wall of people with posters with slogans like: “Christmas for the Azov prisoners”.
