The absence of so many masters of reporting and credibility figures in the stands could affect the journalistic quality of the channel

The recent firings of Ernesto Paglia, 63, Edney Silvestre, 72, and Neide Duarte, 71, leave Globo’s journalism poorer.

Poor in precise and poetic texts. Poor the experienced view of people and facts. Armed with the charisma of veterans becoming intimate with the viewer.

The departure of the three reporters adds to the list of senior journalists with higher salaries leaving the leading channel in the audience.

This year alone, Carlos Tramontina (66) and Chico Pinheiro (69), two of the station’s oldest and most popular anchors, have been fired.

There are only a few older journalist stars left. In São Paulo reporter Ananda Apple, 61. In Rio business presenter and commentator Míriam Leitão, 69. At GloboNews “Conexão” presenter Leilane Neubarth, 64.

The policy of reducing fixed costs encouraged renewal of the station’s cast. The group’s leadership says it has no problem letting go of journalists who have become the face of the news.

Such a movement raises a question: will the quality of Globo’s journalism remain the same? Okay, young professionals care about “hard news,” the daily coverage of current events.

But most of them lack some gems cultivated by veterans: rich vocabulary, cultural baggage, analytical capacity, references to historical reporting, humanized vision of the art of reporting.

Succession is a matter of course in every company and every industry. Sooner or later the old will have to give way to the young. Or at least share the space with them.

However, in television and particularly in journalism, the lack of iconic figures impoverishes not only television news and other informational programs, but also the practical training of those who are at the beginning of the path and are still immature with a microphone in hand. It is important to live by example.

Due to the neverending string of layoffs, there seems to be only one TV news legend left at Globo: the untouchable William Bonner. The moderator and editorinchief of the “Jornal Nacional” will be 60 years old in 2023.
