According to an Ipsos poll conducted for Global News, more than half (54%) of Canadians think Justin Trudeau should step down as Liberal leader and that Canada should have a new prime minister.
Not surprisingly, support for such a change is strongest in Alberta (65%), but it’s also a sentiment prevalent in the Atlantic provinces (57%), as well as in Ontario, Manitoba and Saskatchewan (56%). .
In Quebec, the poll is favorable to Mr. Trudeau, while only 43% of people hope he leaves the country’s highest office.
The data also shows that 49% of Canadians believe there should be a federal election in 2023.
With a share of 65%, young people between the ages of 18 and 34 are the most willing to choose.
Respondents also rated the performance of key national party leaders. Only Jagmeet Singh, leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP), received majority support at 53%.
Justin Trudeau has 45% positive opinions and Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has 41%. Bloc Québécois’ Yves-François Blanchet gets 43%, despite the poll being national.
Keep in mind that the next federal election cannot legally be held until 2025, four years after the 2021 general election that gave Justin Trudeau a second minority government.
The Ipsos survey was conducted among 1,004 Canadians between December 14th and 16th.
