François Legault continues to dominate the list of the most popular politicians, even if the prime minister’s love rating has been falling for two years. Meanwhile, his minister, Christian Dubé, won the hearts of citizens, while Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois and Mélanie Joly made it into the top 10 most popular personalities, according to a Léger-Le poll.

Duhaime the Unloved
For the past two years, several politicians have seen their star fade among Quebecers. Along with François Legault, this is the case of Economy and Energy Minister Pierre Fitzgibbon, who now arouses more negative than positive opinions. Ministers Ian Lafrenière and Isabelle Charest, who still rank well in the list of citizens’ favorite political figures, have also lost a few feathers. The palm of the most hated politician goes to Éric Duhaime. With 57% negative opinion, the leader of the Quebec Conservative Party has not yet reached the score of former Liberal Minister Gaétan Barrette, who had achieved 65% negative opinion.
PSPP is loved by caquists
Previously little-known PQ leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon rose from 40th to 5th place among the most popular politicians in the space of two years. His campaign performance is no stranger to his new popularity rating. “He’s got a little bit of Jack Layton [parce] that he stayed above the fight” and didn’t fall in the alley fights, emphasizes Jean-Marc Léger. Not a heavyweight in the PLQ
The four potential candidates to lead the PLQ are not known. Few know Marc Tanguay, André Fortin, Monsef Derraji and Joël Lightbound, all of whom have shown interest in the Liberal throne since the departure of Dominique Anglade. Interim leader, Marc Tanguay, ranks 41st among Quebecers’ most popular politicians. But if 15% of respondents like him, even more (18%) have a bad opinion of him. The other three rank even further down the barometer of the most popular politicians. “They start from afar, there is currently no heavyweight in the race for the lead in the PLQ,” notes Jean-Marc Léger.
Trudeau an asset to his party
Although more Quebecers now think badly of Justin Trudeau than praise him, the Canadian prime minister is still among the top 10 popular politicians. “He remains an important asset for his party because there are more people who value him than people who vote for the Liberal Party of Canada,” Jean-Marc Léger analyses. The love rate of his minister, Mélanie Joly, has skyrocketed in the last two years. It is now reaping the favor of 46% of the people. “He’s really become a star in Quebec,” said the pollster. Among federal elected officials, we also note the popularity of block leader Yves-François Blanchet, who does not falter.
Solidarity beloved plant
Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois’ love rate is increasing. The old Red Square is less polarizing than it used to be. With 48% positive opinion, the QS co-spokeswoman is the 7th most popular politician, just behind Manon Massé. The popularity of the Left Party’s two leading figures is undeniable at Solidarity. In third place, it is Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante who wins the favor of QS supporters. “It is really perceived as solidarity,” emphasizes Jean-Marc Léger. The other city elected official that stands out is the mayor of Quebec. However, even if 33% of people have a good opinion of Bruno Marchand, this performance is far from Régis Labeaume, who collected 62% of the positive opinion.
Guilbault has a lead
Still at the top of the list, the CAQ boss can boast of still being the most popular politician in Quebec. Despite this, François Legault has lost the favor of 10% of people since 2020. The surprise in the CAQ troops is the enthusiasm for the Secretary of Health that never dries up, unheard of for this position, which generally does the opposite. “There really is a honeymoon between Christian Dubé and Quebecers. The current government was re-elected because of one thing, and that is her handling of the pandemic and her […] still surfing on it. The potential contenders to succeed François Legault are not left out either. In this category, Geneviève Guilbault holds a leading position among CAQ voters with a positive opinion of 79%. She is followed by Bernard Drainville and Sonia LeBel. Simon Jolin-Barrette, a former pilot on the thorns of secularism and Law 101 reform, is a rather divisive character. If 33% of citizens have a good opinion of him, a quarter dislike him. “He made a lot of enemies,” notes the pollster.
Methodology: A web survey of 1002 Quebecers aged 18+ was conducted from December 7th to 10th, 2022. Respondents were required to be able to express themselves in French or English and were recruited at random via LEO’s online panel.
