John Mayer has announced that he is leaving Columbia Records after 20 years and eight albums.

He began by revealing that he had “a wonderful personal and creative relationship” during those 21 years together, but now he “decided not to renew my recording agreement with Columbia Records.”

Mayer continued, “As hard as it is to say goodbye, I’m excited to find new ways to make music, both my own and with other artists.”

Mayer’s first release with Columbia was his debut studio album, Room For Squares, which was released in June 2001. It peaked at number eight on the US Billboard 200 and earned him a Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for Your Body Is A Wonderland. .

To date, Room For Squares has become his best-selling album, with approximately 4.5 million copies sold in the US.

He will release six more records while exploring different musical directions, including incorporating a more bluesy sound, ahead of his latest release with Columbia, Sob Rock.

The Sob Rock tour was temporarily put on hold when he and his band members tested positive for COVID-19.
