Boxing: Gervonta Davis ARRESTED days before title fight on alleged domestic violence charges

Undefeated boxer Gervonta Davis is arrested on domestic violence charges just days before his title fight – child prodigy Floyd Mayweather’s April clash with rival Ryan Garcia is now at risk

Boxer Gervonta Davis has been arrested in Florida for domestic violence.

Davis, one of the sport’s biggest stars, was scheduled to defend his WBA (regular) lightweight title against Hector Garcia on Jan. 7 in what was a comeback from a delicious clash with longtime rival Ryan Garcia (23-0) in April.

But both fights are now in jeopardy after the undefeated 28-year-old was arrested in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. on Tuesday. He faces charges of domestic violence for assault.

The Baltimore native (27-0 with 25 knockouts) is scheduled for a hearing early Wednesday morning, according to the Broward County Sheriff’s website.

He did not immediately respond to an email from asking for comment.

Neither TGB Promotions, which is hosting the event, nor Davis’ US broadcaster Showtime have commented on his arrest or the possible implications for the upcoming fight.

However, the fight with 24-year-old Garcia has also been threatened by the legal battle Davis faces in Baltimore over a hit-and-run allegation. His trial in the case is scheduled to begin February 16 in Baltimore Circuit Court.

Davis faces 14 charges related to a suspected hit-and-run accident in the early hours of November 5, 2020 that injured four people. If convicted, he faces more than four years in prison.

In February 2020, Davis was charged with a misdemeanor in an incident in which he was seen “slapping his former girlfriend,” according to police in Coral Gables, Florida.

That case was dropped on Dec. 13, but viral video surfaced showing the 5-foot-5 lightweight grabbing a woman’s neck at a basketball game and pulling her off camera.

Davis confirmed the video but denied hitting the woman.

The former prodigy of boxing icon Floyd Mayweather left promotion firm Money last week.

Despite his legal troubles, Davis is known as one of boxing’s most devastating punchers, with a 93 percent knockout-to-win percentage. In his short career, Davis has defeated headliners such as Leo Santa Cruz, Mario Barrios and Jose Pedraza.
