The annual event is fast approaching and the schedule of activities is becoming clearer. NHL Director of Content Steve Mayer revealed key details on the circuit’s official website on Wednesday. Thus, kudos to baseball ahead of the duel between the standings leaders and the Pittsburgh Penguins, especially since the game will be held in the mythical home of the Red Sox. Orr, Bucyk and Chara are joined by two former Red Stockings suit wearers, Jason Varitek and Tim Wakefield, as part of the “ceremonial throw” performed with a puck on an ice diamond.

“We’re going to have a unique way of doing the ceremonial faceoff or first throw; it will be a bit of a combination of both. There will be alumni from the Red Sox and the Bruins. And we’ll show Bobby Orr,” Meyer promised.

Will Mother Nature cooperate?

The league does not expect any weather problems for this first game of this kind, which will be played in the famous baseball stadium since January 1, 2010. The forecast is currently showing sun and a temperature of around 10 degrees Celsius.

“We’ve seen it all before. At first we expected showers on matchday and that worried us a bit. Rain is not our friend, especially when it’s 10 degrees or more. At the moment, however, the prospects are very favourable,” said Meyer.

Regardless of the playing conditions, the on-site audience should be spoiled. It is a privilege for the NHL to return to Fenway Park, and also a task that had to be done all over again.

“We’ve gotten to the point where we have to revisit these fabulous stadiums,” the NHL official admitted. That was high on our list. Then the Bruins play great hockey and it will be a great game to start 2023. You can’t find anything better with Fenway Park.

TVA Sports will broadcast the Winter Classic on Monday 2 January at 2pm.
