Russia: Drone shot down near military base 500km from Ukraine

The military base was hit by a drone attack on Monday, killing three Russian soldiers.

Russian air defenses on Thursday shot down a drone near the main Engels military base, which is 500 kilometers from the Ukrainian border and was hit earlier Monday by a deadly drone strike attributed to Ukraine.

“An air defense system was activated on the territory of the Engels district. An unidentified object was destroyed (…) No threat to the safety of residents,” said regional governor Roman Boussargine via telegram.

He later clarified that it was a drone and that its fragments damaged a fence, a house and a car with no casualties.

Three soldiers died on Monday

The Russian military airfield Engels, located in this area, was hit by a drone attack on Monday, in which three soldiers died, according to Moscow. They were killed by debris from a Ukrainian drone after it was destroyed by air defenses.

On December 5, Moscow also accused Ukraine of launching drone strikes on the Engels base and another in the Ryazan region, southeast of Moscow.

This is therefore the third incident in a month that affects the vicinity of this Russian air base, known for protecting strategic bombers, devices designed to attack targets of high importance.

This new incident comes as Ukraine on Thursday denounced fresh “massive” Russian attacks on its energy infrastructure.
