Basic services and minimum wage accompany inflation in Uruguay

From the first day of 2023, electricity, landline telephony, mobile phones and the internet, as well as water service will increase.

The household sector pays an average of 3.5 percent for electricity bills, and water bills will be 6.7 percent.

Telephony increases are set today, although it has emerged that the National Telecommunications Administration (ANTEL) will set an average two percent increase for its various services.

For his part, Labor and Social Security Minister Pablo Mieres announced a nine percent increase in the minimum wage, which is very close to the rate of inflation.

“The increase will be slightly above the inflation that occurred in the year, which is estimated at around 8.5 percent,” Mieres said at a press conference.

He pointed out that the minimum wage was above inflation in the first year of President Luis Lacalle Pou’s government, “slightly above in the second and third”.

The minister thought it likely that the average salary at the end of 2022 would be “slightly above” the consumer price index.

Data from Uruguay’s central bank suggests inflation will end the year at 8.4 percent, above the government’s forecast range of 3 to 6 percent.
